Pieces of tree trunks and roots from South China are assembled into a large scale installation. They stand on ´soft ground` a rug which provides a new skin for the original tiles and acts as soft and sound absorbing cushion. The surface of the carpet, identical to the tiles underneath, is like a map pointing to the events and people who have been occupying the floor of the Haus der Kunst from 1937 to today. Looking at it more closely, its trompe l’oeil-esque patterning is reminiscent of a simulation of Chinese ink-wash painting based on landscapes and trees. Much as the so-called scholar’s rocks, these tree trunks and roots are considered vehicles for contemplation.
