Chinesische Küche im Haus der Kunst

Ai Weiwei bringt einen eigenen Koch, Xiao Pan, mit. Dieser wird während des dreiwöchigen Aufbaus das 14-köpfige Team verpflegen. Die Küche der Gästewohnung im Haus der Kunst wurde hierfür um einige essentielle Gegenstände ergänzt: Schalen, Stäbchen, Gastronomie-Reiskocher, zwei Gas-Hockerkocher, sowie einen Wok.

Soft Ground.

Es brauchte einen Container, ein Schiff, einen Laster und am Ende noch einen Kran.
Vier Wochen ist Ai Weiweis monumentale Arbeit “Soft Ground” von Peking nach München unterwegs gewesen, bevor sie heute Mittag an ihrem Bestimmungsort eingetroffen ist, der zugleich ihr Ursprung ist: Ausgangspunkt für den 380 m² großen Teppich waren die 969 Solnhofener Platten, die seit 70 Jahren den Fußboden von Halle II im Haus der Kunst bedecken. Stück für Stück ließ Ai Weiwei die Platten abfotografieren, mit allen Schattierungen und Abnutzungserscheinungen. Die Dokumentation dieser steinernen Oberfläche wurde zur Vorlage für eine weiche textile Schicht, die für die Dauer der Ausstellung in Halle II liegen und die architektonische Textur des Raumes verändern wird. Ein “Soft Ground”, dessen Schwerkraft allerdings nicht zu unterschätzen ist – gute zwei Stunden dauerte es, bis das Exponat mit seinem Gewicht von einer runden Tonne ausgeladen war.

Your work has been presented in many different ways: Just now you’re having an exhibition in Japan which is curated in a classical way and displays only sculptures. And then, on the other hand you have shows like at Documenta or at Haus der Kunst in Munich, where you were given much more freedom and independence a kind of carte blanche to do whatever you want.

AWW:

I think traditionally the galleries, museums or institutions who show the work are like dead bodies of last wars. But Haus der Kunst is showing the killing field.

MW:

The killing field: The artist has to struggle, he may even hurt himself or to damages to others. The title of the exhibition is So Sorry. It’s a beautiful title Chris Dercon suggested. It comes from how we look at the world: It’s a world of rationality, a result of our logic, it’s the result of results. It’s everything. We are not really controlling it, even if we might think we are. It’s about how we look at the world, how we look at it as humans or as artists functioning in the world you know, your own performance and the performance of others. you want yourself to be understood this way or the other way.

Ai Weiwei wird das ganze Haus der Kunst in Beschlag nehmen. Innen wie außen, Vorderseite wie Rückseite. Aktuell werden die kolossalen Säulen der Frontseite des Hauses eingerüstet um während der Ausstellung eines der Schlüsselwerke Ai Weiweis präsentieren zu können. Eine monumentale Installation wird hier das Motto der Ausstellung „so sorry“ schon von weitem sichtbar machen.

the exhibition “so sorry” at the Haus der Kunst contains my work practice from the 1990s until today. It is the most comprehensive and largest scale exhibition I ever had. It includes works that are related to architectural installations, videos, photography and my blog writings: a survey of my actions as an artist trying to find new possibilities in expression and communication through new forms and trying to develop a new language; communicating the idea that the artist is the medium is the message rather than their produced artefacts. In that sense, the internet provides the most important technology developed by human beings in terms of freedom of gathering information and expressing one’s ideas. Exercising your mind on the internet is trying to face reality and at the same time to influence it by the skills of communication and new forms of expression.
